Liability issues... If you're under 16 you can't touch anything hot or sharp or climb a ladder because of child labor laws. So it would make more sense for a company to hire someone over 16 who can do those tasks and they don't have to worry about you accidentily getting hurt doing something that you shouldn't be.

In most states, you are only allowed to hire people 16 and up if they have to work with any sort of appliance. It's a risk factor. You'll be hard pressed to find a job that allows the hiring of people under 16.

Well the Starbucks that's in the S.Kroger that I go have a elderly man working the counter although there area some young ones working there too. Perhaps they hire more younger to uphold their image.

There may be reasons for this ... the company may have a policy. In Ontario, this is not age discrimination as age is described as being 18-65. That may change soon though with many of the onslaught of suits dealing with children's issues.

Child labor laws and OSHA laws (safety agency). ANY type of mechanical device requires you to be 18 to be employed. We found this out when my 17 yr. old attempted to find a job and a grocery store told us even a box knife (razor knife) used to open boxes and then stock shelves is technically a mechanical device and requires the user to be 18.

Too many rules to hire those under 16 in most states. It costs to much to administer.
