I keep reading about people who are afraid for their health because their AC doesn't work or their AC won't keep up with the heat. What in the world would these people do if they were teleported back to, say, 1920?

ROFLMAO!!
As a former yankee now living in southern Alabama, I have to say...

Damned if I know how the heck they did it!

BUT...I did see an old house that was built to "beat the heat." It had HUGE windows, and the coolest thing...when you went in, you entered a long hallway, that went clear from one end of the house to the other, with rooms opening off to either side. I'm told this was called a "dog run", and in some really old houses, there was no roof over it, they tended to build to take advantage of shade trees. In these really hot summer days, the doors were opened up to encourage a breeze to blow through...I don't know, but it might have worked.

OK, I need to go turn the temp down on the AC...it is HOT in this house!!

I am 27 and I live in the south and we didn't have ac until I was about 10 years old. I survived the heat during that bad drought in the 80's. Now I have become dependent on ac. It is a matter of being comfortable. If you don't know what it is like to have something you can't miss it. I don't like summer time and I never did because it was always so hot. I don't use the ac very often now. I turn it on around lunch and turn it off in the afternoon after I have cooked supper. The ac has been off in here for at least three hours and I have to sit under a blanket because it is rather cool in here. I do sleep with an ac on in the bedroom. I would still prefer to have an old box fan in the window at night. I haven't slept that good in years. There is no fresh air with an ac.

Keep in mind that many things around today create more heat, which wouldn't have been the case that long ago. Automobiles create a LARGE amount of heat, as do appliances such as computers & tv's, washers & dryers. Also having buildings close together traps the heat in, so large sky scrapper apartments built right next to each other trap the heat in, causing the tempeture to go up even more.

What's hot now isn't the same as what was hot in 1920. Tempetures are on the rise, and it's not all from the ozone.

That is a very good question. I have been living in Florida for 4 years and can't imagine it without good ol' AC. Now we did survive (twice) two weeks without it when the hurricanes knocked out our power. We handled it much better than I would have expected but would not want to live by choice without AC long term. If there were no AC I suppose housing wouldn't be so darn expensive out here though.

Well idk what they would do. I live int he south and can go fine with a day without air conditioning. However on some days it is unbarebly hot and thats the only time i would worry about teh ac.

But to answer your question, it is because of global warming it is getting hotter then it use to. So if they went back in time they would be experiencing a slightly cooler atmosphere.

Before air conditioning, they took long lunch breaks or sat out the hottest days. Also, having grown up in a hot climate, people were more acclimatized and conditioned to endure hot weather than they are today.

They would have to assimalate to the heat. I moved from New York to Phoenix, Arizona (the desert)! One needs to assimalate to the heat...the body will adjust. The human body is an amazing thing! I moved form Phoenix to the state of Vermont(BRRRRR)...the body adjusts...believe me I know!

really, back then they WERE USED TO IT. im sure they had ways to keep cool but here in the south the older people were just used to it. bottom line, they did not have a choice, they learned to sit still, be quite and stay cool!
ive asked my granparents the same question.

they adapted to their situations and made do with what they had. the world has become so modernized and lazy that people think they can't do without the comforts of technology that we have today. the truth of the matter is, if we HAD to do without a/c for the rest of our lives, then we would adapt to our circumstances.
