You have a water leak. if you can locate the highest concebtration of ants, or follow their path, they will lead you to the water source. This is often a roof leak, so the "nest" will probably be in the attic.
Carpenter ants, unlike termites, have no ability to digest cellulose(wood) However, after it becomes water-damaged they will forage around inside the wood, feeding off of fungi and other bits of food.
Boric acid is effective, but I have seen big problems arise when attics are indiscriminately dusted, and the corrosive dust gets transferred to the breathing space of little children through leaking ducts.
Dry the conditions out completely, and your ants will dissappear.
Be sure to check the wet area for water damage, dry rot (a type of fungi) and mold.

'Call the Union' hahaha
That was the first thing that came to mind...hehe
The only way that I have ever head to be able to get rid of them successfully is to call an exterminator. It may cost a bit, but, they will came out a second and maybe a third time to make sure that they are truly gone. Some of these places come with a guarantee. But, like I said, it does cost a bit.
Trying to do it yourself is gonna keep you busy for a long long time ......like forever.
These rotten wood eaters and so intrusive and so far under and in and around all of the foundation and wood of your house that you can't possibly kill the 'home' of them.
Good luck.

Mix a powered chocolate with boric acid and place along the walls in the space between the floor and the baseboard and other places that children don't have access to, under and behind your stove refrigerator etc.

you really should get an exterminator for this problem, because they eat the wood that supports your house.
they especially like damp wood, and can cause structural damage.so don't mess around. if you do try to kill them yourself you need to find the nest - destroy all and kill the queen. their nests are in hidden spots, and you have to track them back to where they live. sometimes you will have to tear apart a wall section. when i had them they seemed very busy at night.
