The fan is working fine...but the air doesn't really seem to be that cold...so I don't know what to do...I ran it for like 2 hours straight this afternoon and it really didn't make a noticeable difference. I live in a complex, so the filters get changed regularly. Please help! I have a 1 year old daughter and the maintence guys are gone already...and it's really quite uncomfortable in here.

Ah, an air conditioning question. I usually get paid to do this.

There are a variety of things that could be wrong with your unit. First, check your thermostat. Make sure it's actually set to the "cool" setting at the desired temperature. Now, you said the fan was working, but can you hear the compressor? It'll be a lower pitched whine, but you should be able to hear it. If you can't, then that's the problem.
It's a good idea to check the filter. A clogged filter can make your unit run least efficiently by working too hard and cooling very little. If your filter's too dirty, then pull it out until you can get a new one in place.
And last, your coil might be dirty, which could also spell disaster for your air conditioning unit. Have your maintenance crew (or you could do it yourself) wash the coils clean with a garden hose.

Anything above that would require a professional to come and diagnose, but those are some things you can check for yourself, and maybe even fix the problem.

Good luck!

If you are in an apartment it is the responsibility of the complex to have someone on-call to assist you. With that said, it will probably not get you any service before Monday. Your unit is probably out of freon and will require a certified professional to dispense it.

IN THE INTERIM....if you live in a unit in which you can safely leave your windows up and its cooler outside than it is inside then do so. If you have to think twice about that answer then don't do it unless you have or are a big burly guy that no one would think about trying to invade. The alternatives to that would be:
1. go buy a fan (and keep the receipt and return it later)
2. call a friend whose AC is working and suggest a sleep over and take ice cream and video movie.

Could be that part of it has iced itsself over, unplug it for about an hour and see if that works, if not im afraid that the dern thing needs to be recharged and only your maintenance crew will be able to do that

by the way im assuming you are talking about a window air conditioner
