Forrest Gump, Willy Wonka, and Sam... those are great characters, played by some phenomenal actors! Those are some of my favorites too.
This is a very hard question to answer... so I guess I'll go with Melvin Udall played by Jack Nicholson in "As Go As It Gets." But I think a character is not only defined by the actor its played by but also the other actors/actresses involved... and what a cast... Helen Hunt, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Greg Kinnear. This is one movie I never get tired of watching.

Vincent played by Ethan Hawk from Gattaca. Not only his character has to fight his family image of him but also the image that his DNA was showing, all because he had a dream/goal and decided he wanted it no matter what.
