I don't have any kids but...
I was left home alone all the time at about age 8, only for a couple hours at most.
When I was 11/12 I started babysitting neighborhood kids along with my siblings for a good amount of time.
Not until I was 17 was I left home alone for a few days at a time.

My parents used to leave me and my sister home alone when I was only 7 and my sister was 4...It was definitely traumatizing, because I didn't know what to do in some situations. I suggest people don't leave their kids home alone until they are old enough to do most things on their own...maybe 12 is a good age, but not 7 and 4.

I go to school, so during the summer my kids are home alone for a couple of hours. My oldest daughter is 13 and very mature, so I don't feel bad at all about leaving them. My youngest is 6, so she doesn't have to bother with diapers or anything like that, so I feel that it is good experience for her.

The laws in my state say that 13-14 is appropriate, given a child is mature enough to handle emergency situations, etc.

Yes I have left my child alone. Started when he was 9. But I would only go to the corner store. Not even 5 minutes. When he was about 10 he didn't want to go with me to the grocery store any more so I would leave him home and call and check on him. I taught him my cell phone number and he was only allowed to answer the phone when he seen my phone number on caller ID. Start off with very short periods of time and work your way up. Make sure to tell them not to answer the door or the telephone unless it's you. My son is now 12. I don't care if his grandmother is calling when im not home DO NOT PICK UP THE PHONE unless its me

I have never left my 11 year old home alone, but in NJ, they are supposed to be 14 before they are left alone. I doubt too many parents wait that long, but I don't think my son is ready yet. And now that we have a 7 month old daughter, I definitely cannot leave him.
