You can remove the battery cable to clear the codes temporarily. But after about 100 miles of driving, the check engine light will come back on, and will continue to do so each time you remove the battery cable until you have the ECM checked by a technician with a code reader to be able to identify what exactly is causing the problem.

Well disconnecting the battery terminal all together will reset it to factory, IF you have an older model vehicle.

If you have made any modifications to your vehicle though, a programmer would really be beneficial. I have the Hypertech and it made a night and day difference to my truck..I was able to tell it the suspension I put on, the rear gearing, the new bigger tire size..and all the other bells and whistles and it basically made my truck ru *stock* when its not. Plus, anytime my check engine light comes on I can throw that on it gives me the code, and once I fix the problem it clears it out for me. So if you're driving anything that's not completely stock..it would be a good investment.

If you have an older car it can work but you have to leave it off for like twenty minutes, if its newer you have to do it by a computer and if you have a good auto zone they may be able to do it.

i think you have to have a dealership or mechanic clear the codes with their computer. around here it costs about $30 to do.
