i can't comprehend this at all, i thought it'd be the other way around..?

Probably because women aren't having as many children anymore. If you're not having like 12 kids, you don't need such big hips.

If true, it's because in the old days, before modern medicine, women with large hips had fewer problems (and deaths) in childbirth, and were better equipped to pass on their large-hipped genes. With the advent of modern medecine, women and children rarely die in childbirth, and large-hippedness no longer conveys a reproductive advantage.

Having large hips may convey a reproductive disadvantage nowadays, because men might prefer mates with smaller hips, so having smaller hips may confer a reproductive advantage.

I think that perhaps it's the other way around - human heads have gotten larger down thru history! It is a sacrifice that the human race makes - trading away an easy birth for intelligence and all that comes with it, including (compared to other mammals) a huge cranium.
