I have been looking thru the questions here tonight and have come to the conclusion that 'engine wiz' is an idiot!! I,m guessing he is either a 15 year old reading from a book or one of the mechanics we all have worked with at one time or another in a shop that thinks he knows everything but is wrong half the time. All you real mechanics know the type fresh out of school and still thinks that everything on a vehicle is cut and dried and can be fixed with a book or just doesn,t know any other way but to go by the book. As a mechanic of 25+ years I always use a manual right after I check things out that I have learned in the trenches from many years of working on cars. There is no substitute for real knowledge and not someone reading out of a book. And if and when 'engine wiz' ever becomes a real mechanic he will learn this too.

A good mechanic, or any person with engine knowledge would already know just by walking up to the engine with the knowledge of how each automaker builds their engine can point out the #1 cylinder. Each engine, ( Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, ) is built unique in their own way. Some automakers "stamp" the #1 on the intake to indicate the #1 cylinder, or you may find the number 1 on the distributer cap, if the engine has one, then trace the plug wire to that spark plug.

If you are the best in the world, why bother asking? Depends on whether it's a Ford or Chevy. I guess being the best, you automatically assumed that we could read your mind. Dodge and Chevy are the same; Ford is different. Ford is on the right side, running numerically from front to rear, Chevy and Dodge are odd 1-7 on the left, and even, 2-8 on the right. Now if you knew that, why ask; and if you didn't know, why not admit it. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Iknow is right. There are a lot of things we can remember about certain things we deal with all the time but theres a point where some can be close but you need to be sure. There are generalizations on the topic which a lot of people have revealed but nothing is written in stone unless you find it in a shop manual.

If your such an engine whiz , why are you asking stpuid questions you already know the answers to instead of working on cars ? Why don,t you answer some questions and help somebody out of a jam.

the numbers should be marked on the intake manifold, and if not i beleive it is the shortest cable to the distributor.
