First of all, go to a reputable riding stable and tell them you are beginner. Ask for a very gentle horse, and get to know him/her before you ever try to mount.
The more you know ahead of time the better, so read as much as you can, and talk to any friends /family who ride/own horses.
ASK ASK ASK if you have questions.
Buy a riding helmet with a harness, and wear long pant and shoes- shorts and sandals aren't a good idea safetywise.
Above all, ALWAYS ride with a buddy, preferably one with more experience than you.
I wouldn't ride more than an hour the first few times, or you will be really saddle sore.
Take your time and be safe, and enjoy!

this is a TERRIFIC site!!!
will take a while to read everything, but you should go through and look at the getting started stuff, and then in your free time check out the other things.

i will summarize
safety:
- wear helmet and possibly steel toe or just tough boots
- touch or talk to the horse when you are in its blind spots (right close to its face and directly like close up on his butt)
- make your movements and sounds predictable I. E. dont all of a sudden scream out because you saw your friend down the road a bit.
- be confident, and if you really do not feel safe, tell someone because if you dont, your nerves will make it unsafe.
- NEVER be afraid to ask questions, after all, you ARE paying someone to give you lessons :-P

-- most importantly: relax and enjoy the ride!!!

you should take lessons from some one who knows their stuff, or has been riding for quite some time.. a few basic rules are always let your horse know where you are around him, talk to him or have one hand on him, when you are in the saddle keep your heels down, and your feet NOT too far into the stirrups, you could get a serious injury if you got bucked off and your feet stuck in the stirrups. dont rely on the reins for balance, use your legs/thighs, dont pull on the horses mouth constantly, they get "sour" that way(where they wont do what you ask of them, throwing up their head.. etc.) take it slow for a while.. dont start cantering untill you know how the horse will react and untill you know how to balance yourself in the saddle... if you have some one teaching you there it would be better.. happy trails!

Clinton Anderson has some great dvd's. You can go to his site and get some, he's easy to understand. Did you already buy a horse? There are so many things, start with a lesson, go home and practice what you learned, then take another one. I took them once a week for awhile and it was wonderful.
