Rent's cheaper in a garbage can...and the trash is fresher.

Because a Garbage can is so more personal, and fitting to him, he can POP the lid and come out whenever he wants, I'm sure that's not the case with a regular size Dumpster, a Garbage can is just a notch up...

I think he lives in a garbage can because it is rent controlled.
A dumpster would be like a penthouse to Oscar, and he wouldn't want any kind of luxury in his life- it would interfere with his grouchiness.
Not to mention that Oscar doesn't seem to be employed, so how would he afford a dumpster? Have you seen the price of a decent one in NYC?

Because he likes the closeness of a garbage can. A dumpster is way too roomy for him and it costs to much to rent. Plus, have you ever seen a dumpster on Seasme Street before? No! Unless you go inside Bert and Ernie's bedroom.

Because garbage cans are more interesting? haha.. Its easier to shut the garbage lid that it would be the big heavy metal top of a dumpster

Back when the show came out we only had garbage cans. If the show started now it would probably be "Oscar the heavily sedated so he won't be such a grouch" living in a mob owned, Waste Management high density polystyrene refuse receptacle.

My guess is that Oscar is a small creature and a dumpster would be too big for Oscar.

Garbage cans have that cozy loft feeling... maybe a dumpster is just too much space for a single ornery monster.

HA! i donno good question...maybe because he likes the smaller space or becuz he has to since he lives in the same neighbor hood has big bird and the rest of the gang...i mean u usually don't see a dumpster in a neighborhood...so yea...maybe that's why...but we will never know for sure
