Many of these pattern books can be found at local libraries, thrift stores and even swap meets. You can also find many on ebay. Check at local yarn shops for any clubs that may trade old patterns. Many people have old pattern books that they would love to trade with you. Some companies like Annies Attic and others also come out periodically with reprints or collections of patterns. Check their websites for phone numbers or addresses where you can contact them. Ask if they have what you are looking for. Since I'm not sure if you are looking for clothing, toys or afghan patterns, it is a bit difficult to help you with any specifics. Good luck in finding the patterns you are looking for.

Here are a few free pattern sites online to start you out. I don't know if they have what you are looking for but they have quite a few patterns.

Having a computor is a major advantage in finding anything. Your best bet to find these patterns are to do an online search by keying in specific words in your search. I did some checking for you and most of them are asking for money, but don't feel you must pay, there are sites that offer some free merchandise, so make sure you do enter "free knitting and crocheting patters 1980's". The internet will give you a long list of places for you to check into. Also if you just key in Vintage knitting and crocheting patterns. I hope this will help you. You can email me anytime if you need further assistance I'd be glad to help you. I found some great free pattern places.
Good luck with your research!!!!!
