There are a lot of good brands. You should make sure it has the following features:

Needle Down (or Needle Up/Down) - when you stop sewing, the needle stops in the fabric, instead of lifting up like a standard machine. This is especially important for quilting.

Feed dogs that can be lowered or covered - important if you plan on quilting your own (vs. just piecing and sending it out to be quilted). This allows you to do free motion quilting.

Free motion foot or Darning foot - So you can free motion quilt (moving the quilt around in curves, etc. instead of just sewing a straight line).

Walking foot - usually an attachment, sometimes purchased separately. It helps feed the top and bottom fabrics evenly when you're quilting.

Larger space under the arm - imagine how much extra fabric you can stuff under there when you're quilting. The more room, the better.

A few basic stitches is all you really need. One good straight stitch will handle all of your piecing and most quilting. A blanket stitch is nice for machine applique, as is a tight zigzag. Everything else is gravy.

Whatever brand you get, make sure it can be serviced locally. You don't want to get a machine and then find out the nearest repair shop is an hour's drive away.

Definatly a Singer Sewing Machine. Second hand ones are good too, but I've only had a new machine, Singer has always been my choice and I've been sewing for over 30 years now. Mind you my hubby bought me a new Singer 6 years ago and it works fantastic. Also if you have problems you can contact Singer company for parts, etc. They are very reliable, IMO. I have never had a problem with them. Brother sewing machines can be great as well, with the modern technology they are building up a good array of quality sewing machines.
Good luck,
