If you use bottled sping water to put the fish in and leave it at room temperature you can add it as needed without him having to adjust to it. Hey its only like 80cents at the grocery store and mine has been alive over 3 years. His name is Cosmo...after Kramer on Seinfeld. Good Luck with Sovester.

Bettas are quite tolerant of high gH and kH levels (both of which cause hard water). That being said, as long as you use a product that removes both chloramines and chlorine, you could add your fish immediately to the water.

Setting water out will do nothing to soften the water. And unless you're setting the water out for more than a week, your fish will be subjected to high levels of chloramine, which can be deadly. So just get a dechlorinator and dechloraminator. I, personally, used Aquarium Pharmaceutical's Tap Water Conditioner and Seachem's Neutral Regulator on my three tanks.

Good luck!

I've never had a betta live longer than about a year. If you think your water is to blame, get some treatment chemicals from the pet store.

They'll cost more than the fish, so that's up to you.

Just float the bag with the fish in the water for about 20 minutes and you should be fine then to release him in the bowl . You might let the water sit for 15 minutes before.

Bettas can stay alive in sewer sludge. They've got to be the most toxin-resistant fish known to man. Don't worry too much about the effects of hard water--if you get a healthy betta, it won't hurt him.
