Can't seem to log onto messenger?

I seem to be having a problem logging onto messenger. I deleted the program, and reloaded it, but i still can't log on. In fact I don't even have a messenger icon anywhere except on my desktop and my tray at the bottom right of the screen. any one have any idea what is going on?
