He may be "stuck" somewhere in the dissertation process. If so, send him to

http://www.phinished.com

It's basically a motivational source run by PhD students helping each other get through the process.

He should also talk to his advisors if he's having trouble, including problems with motivation, feelings of inadequacy, indecision about sticking with the program, or life events that have held up his work.

Men need a push to finish the degree. No, not a push off a ladder or a bridge - a gentle "nudge" about how much better his job will be, better pay chances, etc. - or what a party you'll have - or how he can lord it over his high school classmates - whatever works! Good luck, been there, done that. And my guy finished, although about 9-10 months after I did.

Well, I don't know....no one knows unless you specify exactly what the problem is. He may feel overcome by other things in your/his life. But this question to me sounds like a friend of mines problem.... His girlfriend became a student and kept going and going...she never WANTED to graduate or find a job...that's a scary new area of life, life is different in school. She could have gone to school forever...but facing her PhD...was the end level. He needs to plan into and PAST his phD. Ask him what he plans on doing after he graduates...it'll probably bring up negativity, the unknown or a fight. Be gentle, he may be just going into unknown territory.

Maybe he doesn't want to. Why are you pushing him? You are not his wife or mother, and even if you were, if doesn't want a PhD, then he shouldn't have to get one.

does he fear success? tell him to finish and go into teaching at the college level. it's excellent: good pay, great hours, numerous "perks", and a multitude of other benefits. crack the whip upon this slacker!
