Mars and Earth go around the sun in different, uh, circles. The circle for Mars is bigger than the circle for Earth. Mars is always farther from the sun than Earth is. Not only is Mars' circle circumferance longer, Mars moves slower around its circle than Earth moves around Earth's circle. So Earth goes around the sun about 19 times for every 10 times that Mars goes around the sun. That means that Mars is sometimes on the same side of the sun as Earth, but it is also sometimes on the other side of the sun from Earth. Really though Mars' orbit isn't quite a circle. It's an ellipse. So is Earth's orbit. But they are almost circles, so you can just imagine circles and it's good enough. Okay?

In 2003, Mars came closer to Earth than at any time in the last 56619 years or since the time of the Neanderthals.

Contrary to one answer, Mars is NOT always closer to the Earth than is the sun. Since Mars is outside the Earth's orbit and farther out, its orbit sometimes takes it behind the sun from our viewpoint, which is considerably farther. However, it can get as close as 34-35 million miles (55-56 million km).

I wanted to be first to answer this question. Yes, Mars is very close to Earth. It is always closer than the Sun. Why do you ask?
I'm not afraid they will crash cause their orbits do not cross, unless I'm mistaken. If I'm mistaken, I'd rather not know about it.

There are 2 the right thank you to think of on the subject of the size of the earth with appreciate to the sunlight. First, the sunlight's diameter is approximately a hundred cases that of the Earth. So, you will ought to line up a hundred Earth's end-to-end to stretch around the face of the sunlight. the 2d thank you to think of approximately it is your question: how many Earth's could extra healthful interior the sunlight. think of the you had a super, around, fish-bowl and a bunch of marbles. Now think of that the diameter of the fish bowl exchange into 100x the diameter of the each and each marble. That way, a hundred marbles could stretch end to end around the fish bowl. Now, how many marbles will slot in the fish bowl? this is like asking your question on the subject of the Earth and the sunlight. because it seems, we are in a position to stretch the marbles around the fish bowl in 3 guidelines, up/down, in/out and left/suitable, and everywhere in between. So,to fill the bowl we would desire 100x100x100 = a million,000,000 marbles. Or, a pair of million,000,000 Earths could extra healthful interior the sunlight.
