I'm a lefty, and I play a Seagull SG-6 acoustic and a G&L Legacy 2HB electric, which is essentially a Fender Strat. Seagulls are made in Canada, and have a sound reminiscent of Martins for a much, much lower price (I paid under $500 for mine). G&L is the company founded by George Fullerton and Leo Fender after they sold Fender Guitars back in the 70's. Until recently, all G&L guitars were hand-built in their lutherie in southern California, although they now have a line built in Japan. I have a custom-built one that was made in California that I got for $1500 out the door (hardshell case included), which is about what you can start at for a factory built US Fender Strat, price-wise. A hand-built Fender goes for at least twice what I paid for my G&L. Look up brands of guitars on harmonycentral.com (go here for info to compare brands: http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/guitarman.html) and see what real users say about various brands. Both Seagull and G&L make quality lefty products (and G&L doesn't even charge extra to custom build a lefty instead of a righty!) and have outstanding reviews on that site. Good luck. It's tough being a southpaw in a right-handed world. The great thing about playing lefty is, no one can borrow my guitar. The thing that sucks is, I can't borrow anyone else's guitar!

I say go Upright! Bluegrass sounds so nice with a classic upright bass. Plus, they don't make acoustic basses, I think. You could always just get a normal bass and string it backwards. My dad does alot of guitar buying and selling on ebay, and if you can't get a deal in the town where you live, this is the best place to find a good deal. Good luck!
