Winter can be an interesting time to go to the mountains and see all the snow (esp. in Northern Greece). It is very cold in the winter months usually. Greece is not warm year round.
Spring is a great time to go (April time) as it is much greener and you can see flowers. Everything is not wilted and dried out. It's much fresher and there are not many tourists around in the islands etc if you want to have places to yourself. I really love the Cyclades in Springtime.
But if you want it really hot or you want to go swimming in the sea then go in the summer. Also many tourist bars, restaurants etc function only in the summer season. September is great as it is still warm, but the temperature is not too high. It is best to avoid Athens in the hot summer months unless you really enjoy high temperatures and pollution!
But I think that Greece is a great place to go to all through the year and have been in every season! It partly depends on which area you want to go to.

I went in June. The weather is wonderful. There is a place in the Macedonion area (the northern part) - Olimpic Beach. Many people from the US do not know of this area. Mostly a European tourist area. Therefore the prices are still very reasonable. From there you can take excursions to different place. It took a party boat to Skiathos island for the day and it was great. You can also go to Athens from there and many other places. You will be right on the beach and about 2km away from a neighboring hot spot. Taxi's run between the 2 place's and cost's about 2 euro. Much shopping open till early morning, as well as clubs. YOu can rent dirt bikes for the day which is great.

Hey there, glad you'll be visiting our country! Well, you should definitely come over in September. The weather is still warm and the sea is wonderful, but not too hot like in August. And most tourists are gone, so it's not too crowded and you can enjoy your stay better. Plus, the locals will be back from their holidays and you'll be able to see how normal life goes on in Greece (trust me - it has nothing to do with the greek summer madness!). :))

I was there at the end of March and beginning of April. The weather was nice, warm, but not too hot. It was pretty crowded in Athens, but not so much on the islands. Tourist season had not yet started.

I've been there twice, once in October, and once in November. Beautiful weather both times. October was warm enough to swim. Have fun, wish I could go too. :)
