I would say the dumbing down of American culture, because it causes so many of the other problems. For one thing, many other countries pick up our lead, and in this case, the lead could destroy them.
We have somehow accepted lower and lower standards of communication skills, understanding of all kinds, the very ability to study and to learn. I put the blame mostly on the teachers' union, which is responsible for the lower and lower standards in the public schools. If a whole generation of kids can't read and write worth a darn, and have learned to communicate among themselves with a slanguage all their own, that fault must lie with the schools. How are these kids going to fit into the real world of business and science, of technology and world-wide communication? Answer: they are not, and they are going to be angry and frustrated and take it out by becoming uncivilized. Indeed, they already have.
But all is not really lost. There are kids who are hungry for knowledge, who have that curiosity that drives science and technology, and art and literature, and who are willing to learn standard English in order to communicate with experts in these fields and learn from them. If the other kids can then learn from these leaders of their own peers, we can do a massive rescue and rehabilitation -- once the public school system has been radically reformed or ditched in favor of private schools and vouchers.

Technology creating the lack of communication. Misinterpretation is caused by the inability to communicate nonverbal, due to obstacles such as phone, car, fax, computer, and ect. A person can say I love you looking at someone with passion in their eyes, or rolling their eyes, How do you know if you can't see. How much easier is it to threaten someone when you don't have to see them? With the loss of communication comes the loss of emotion. This is tied to empathy. Empathy for the nature which we no longer coexist with but now ignore, and empathy for each other which we avoid with all the home amenities. We now ignore problems while sitting in the luxury of our homes. And think technology for what, greed? Was it worth it and with what cost?

I think the greatest challenge if overpopulation.
Its extremely difficult to solve, because of institutional promotion of reproduction.
It is root cause of most of our problems, including energy, and pollution.
The world is barely capable of handling 6 billion...Its only going to get worse at 10.
