I wasn't born until '66 but boy we had fun!
Kick ball... Red Rover... Simon Says... marathon games of hide and seek that covered several acres and lasted until dark!

I personally had too much imagination... we were once pretending to be Charlie's Angels and went into our barn with lit candles...bad idea... the barn and the horses survived but I burned most of the pasture and an above ground pool and it almost reached a propane tank before my dad put it out! *whew* I'm glad my kids have computers! *L*

The best fun was going outside after supper rounding up all the kids in the neighborhood and playing Red Rover and Mother May I. We also played a game called Sardines; it was the opposite of tag. We rode our bikes up and down the street at break neck speeds and we didn't have helmets. I remember going over the handlebars a few times. Road rash! We didn't know the name for it then, though. Thank you so much for the trip down Memory Lane.
And we had to go home when the street lights came on. That was the rule.

Hide and seek then we would forget to look for the unpopular kids! Or tree climbing, building a fort out of old wood and junk found in a field. Shooting sling shoots at tin cans. Catching lizards and tadpoles. Mowing the lawn (pretend) with the little red wagon and towels drug behind. fishing down at the neighbors creek. Frog hunting. Roller skating on the street (no built in concrete loops) Spending the night at a friends house and sleeping out side in a tent. Sorry got carried away with the memories!

We played "Chinese Jump Rope" by linking rubber bands we collected. (If you had money, mother would buy a length at the fabric store. Obviously, we didn't have money.) I recently showed the game, as best as I could remember with the help of the internet, to some 8th grade girls - they loved it!

Another thing we did was play Double Dutch - I am AMAZED how many kids haven't got a clue how to jump either single or double dutch. The "Jump Rope for Heart" program is a God-send!

Where are their parents??? Do they just drop the kids in front of the TV or computer and leave them to their own devices? Whatever happened to playing with your children? Teach them the games you played ! Kids - ask your parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents to show you the games they played as children! You'll make them feel young again!

We were poor so we played moonlight tag - no flashlights. We had to hide in the shadows from the moon or starlight. Now that I think back about it - all the bugs, snakes, spiders, raccoons, opossums and other animals lurking out there - I'd NEVER do it again! Oh, and there were bats flying around in the dark too. Creepy as it sounds now - it sure was a lot of fun then.

My friend Margaret and I played badminton in my backyard every night after supper. When it got dark we played in the street under the streetlight. We rode our bikes a lot, too, and played a lot of make believe on the front porch. We'd pretend it was a house and we were taking care of our kids and doing dishes, etc. Played with paper dolls. We were girlie girls I guess. When it was real hot outside my mother would put the sprinkler on in the back and we'd run back and forth through it. No AC then. It was great.

Thanks for the question. Enjoyed reading the answers.

Oh, gosh, let me see. We played something we called "grey ghost" ( have no idea how we played it, just remember the name), we rode bikes all over the place, we went down to where the creek went under the road and got into the tunnel thingy and walked through it without getting wet, we walked the railroad tracks, got scared when our neighbors told us there were "gargoyles" in the cornfield, (we believed them), my brother built and rode go-carts and broke his leg once and and his foot once on them, we used to pretend our bedrooms were apartments, and even put numbers on the wall outside of the doors, played restaurant, played ball in the road until a car came by then got out of the way then went back in the road, rode our other neighbor's pony sometimes, and on and on and on. Did I have a great childhood or what?

we rode bicycles, and horses. Walked 3 or 4 miles to friends house. Roller skated, played baseball and kickball. We shot hoops. We danced. We played cards. We jumped rope and played hopscotch. We walked in the woods and collected bugs and put then in jars, we picked flowers and played in the creeks. We sat around and talked. We would lay on our backs in the thick grass and look at the stars at night and try to find animals and identify the stars. And last but not least we played only after our chores and homework was finish. Boy did we have fun.

My two brothers and I had "invented" our own games, both involved throwing a football. One was called tree football where we would climb a tree with our friends and the person on the ground would throw the football at them. Everyday we would change the rules, very flexible. The other game involved riding a bicycle between two points on the street and with one person on opposite sides of the street throwing the football at the person on the bike, only a few spectacular crashes but we howl with laughter when we talk about it now.
