Most Americans do not have passports because they have no need for them. The primary reason that they do not need them is money.

International travel is expensive for Americans, unless you are going to Mexico, Canada, or the Carribean where a passport is usually unnecessary. To travel to a country that requires you to have a passport, for Americans, requires leaving the continent, which can be expensive, because of the greater distances. Basically, that means that, unless you have a job that sends you to other continents, you have to be able to afford to go to need a passport.

In the United States, unlike other countries, I assume, passports are not really used that much for identification, so they are not that common unless you have done, or plan on doing, some traveling.

(As a side note, I would like to express my disdain for those that seem to be so closed minded about traveling because of nationalistic arrogance. I love this country and what it stands for, ideologically. But I would consider people that think that the rest of the world has nothing to offer are denying themselves exposure to a great variety of culture, customs, and experiences.)

I'm an American, and I have no passport. My overseas travels where either in the military, where one is not required, or to places like the Bahamas, Canada and Mexico, where one is not required. If I ever need one, I'll get one.

Many Americans don't have passports. I actually just got mine in February because I needed it to go to Italy. Many Americans either don't need one, or don't have a desire to travel outside the country, for one reason or another.

And a dapper looking American you are! My husband doesn't have one and he just missed a change to go to France for his company because they couldn't wait. I've had one since I was a teenager! C'mon folks! It's a great big beautiful world out there! Go see something beyond your front lawn!
