For a graphics major, get a Mac.

If you get a MacBook Pro, get a black one, not a white one, due to this defect

First, responding to the first answer: First, it's the MacBook with the defect, not the MacBook Pro. Second, The defect has been fixed so it's all good now...lol. Now to answer the question:

Yes. A Mac is MUCH better for graphics than ANY PC. However, the Adobe Creative Suite is not yet a universial application for the new Intel-based Macs, so it will run slower than on the Macs with the PowerPC processor (commonly known as G3, G4, G5) But, you can get a Mac and still run Windows applications AND Windows XP. So, you can get photoshop, indesign, illustrator, and golive for the PC, and install it on your Mac until the universial applications for the new Intel-based Macs come out, which will be in the beginning of 2007, so not that far away. Yes, switching to Apple is a VERY good idea. I'm going into college this year for a graphic design major, and I own a MacBook Pro. I have installed the Adobe Creative Suite on the "Mac side" of my computer, and it works pretty well. Please feel free to email me if you have anymore questions. Buying a Mac is a big decision, mainly because it's expensive, but it certainly pays off! Good luck!

Yes: A Mac Laptop is better specifically for graphics majors.

Reasons:
1. Most High End Graphics Designers use Mac's. There are longstanding reasons for this primarily Apple had a big lead in graphics quality over PCs which were not originally aimed at this seemingly smaller segment of the market (which ironically may end up as the major user market segment).
2. Mac's now have Intel chips inside and can run Microsoft type software if required this is not true in reverse as PCs have no desirable OS2 capability.
3. Mac's have virtually no viruses or Trojans attacking them. ( This alone makes them worth the extra cash) Although this may not remain true completely it is very unlikely that they will ever be dogged by the volume that attack PCs
4. The OS (operating system) is reasonably superior to Windows ( Bill Gates -complementary parody right down to the name inspired no doubt by Apples X-windows)
5. Getting the feel for this system will be important in getting any job or position in the Graphics Industry. (Trust me on this My brother-in-law runs a graphics company and would not think of hiring anyone who was not very much at home on a Mac).
5.In order to stay up to date in the Graphics world one will have to get a new system every two to four years. So even though this system will always do what it originally did it will eventually become a second computer or even sold. Thus look for a system that will serve your needs through college as you will probably want a bigger better one when you get that first job ( Smile a lot of firms will gift you with one or subsidize it when you start)

I'm sure your daughter wants an Apple. And I'm sure you know it's the better system. You are evidently just hoping to save money.

For graphics you will not find a better computer than a Mac. Just try to purchase one with as fast a processor and as much memory (RAM) as you can afford as graphics manipulations require lots of horsepower.

Macs can run graphic programs quite a bit better with low end specs. If you're going for high end though, pick up a PC.

If you can afford it, then go for it. They can be expensive with the specs that your daughter will want, so you may want to get a PC.

I personally don't think it is worth it and I wouldn't, but ask your daughter if she thinks she really needs one. If so, then get the black one, and whether or not you get a Mac or a PC, get the fastest processor and most RAM you can afford.
