You have a very good question. I know it's free, but I still can't see why someone couldn't just leave a notice. It would make it a lot nicer and let us know what is going on!

I was thinking the same thing. My buest guess would be that if Yahoo were to do what you suggested, they would be admitting some sort of mistake or error on their part and that would be bad for their image. I think they'll let people believe that its just that individual who is having problems. But, we yahoo addicts are too smart and flock to the "dealer" to see what the hold up is. The irony is, no matter how stupid yahoo is to not disclose the problem, we'll all come back and still use the messenger.

I am having the same problem. The servers are down, so we could only hope it will be back soon.

Perhaps Yahoo believes its users to be smart enough to figure out that it's not working properly...
