He was mis-named Vito Corleone by the immigration guard at Eliis Island who just saw Vito from Corleone and that became his legal name as far as the US authorities were concerned.

Vito Andolini, He said his name was Coleone when he arrived to USA because someone wanted him dead, Corleone was his native village..

Vito Andolini. I read the book it while I was on holiday this month. He changed it when he emigrates to the US. Corleone being the name of the village he grew up in on Sicily.
