A heat pump is the most efficient. It collects the heat from outside and moves it inside, or the reverse in summer. Of course, cooling has to work this way. But this is more efficient for heat because it doesn't take as much energy as just generating the heat.

A geothermal heat pump is the highest efficiency system for heating and cooling your home. This type of system uses the natural heat of the earth to heat and cool your home. The nice part of this system is that there are no outdoor units. This is a nice feature. No hail damage, no cotton, no bugs in the contactor, no noise while on the patio, no defrost cycles or defrost components to fail. There are several ways to do this type of system. A closed loop system uses a glycol and water solution, that is pumped outside of the home in a large loop of piping in the ground, where it either gathers heat or gives off heat into the ground. A "pump and dump" or open loop system is much cheaper to install but requires a good deal of water. I would not suggest this system unless you have a good water well, as running this type of system on city water would be quite costly. Lastly you need a place to dispose of the water used from the heat pump. ie. a disposal well, pond, creek. There is nothing wrong with the water that you just ran through your heat pump, it has just changed temperature. Your local heating and air contractor should know what is legal and what is not in your area. There are pro's and con's with both systems. The thing that makes a geothermal more effecient than a regular air source heat pump is that it doesn't work any harder when it is 112 outside in the summer, or 10 below in the winter. They are well worth the investment, and typically pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time. As bigg_dogg44 stated Trane/American Standard is the system to look at. They make very very good air source heat pumps. Buy a quality system if you are looking for efficiency throughout the life of the system. As not all heating and cooling equipment is created equal.
