If you went for the iMac then you can have up to 320Gb hard drive. You can also have 8Gb of RAM The iMac footprint is tiny as all the workings are in the screen. The only external connections are the keyboard and a power lead. It will come with iLife and maybe even iWorks which will give the basic day to day software you require. Sadly most software will have to be purchased such as Photoshop and Aperture for photography work. I would not load any windows based software as this kind of defeats the idea of a Mac. You can download for free Skype for a Mac and also Adium which will allow you to use chat programmes like MSN, AIM etc. An external hard drive would allow the inbuilt application of Time Machine to back all of your files automatically. Depending on the budget a Time Capsule would make life easier as this has the hard built in. The more expensive version would be to use a Drobo Unit for reliable back up. Don't forget the UPS ! Hard drives do not like powers surges or failures. Hope my comments help.

.xls files are Excel files. You need the Excel program (part of Microsoft Office).

If you have Word, you could rename the file to have the extension .doc then open it in Word, but it will be filled with computer gibberish.

If you have some other spreadsheet program, you might be able to Import the files into it.

That is an Excel spreadsheet. You need Microsoft Excel or another Spreadsheet or DB program that supports importing from Excel.

Open Office, a great FREE office suite, has a spread sheet program called Calc. It supports the Excel format:

I'm not sure if this will work on Windows 98, but if you just want to view the file, then download this for free.
