Think about this, we play an 8 team conference in high school. They have Varsity and JV with about 15 players on each team. There are probably about 60 conferences in Michigan (the state I live in). So multiply that by at least 50.
At night during the summer, graduates play soccer in our county 4 days a night where we have about a 25 player turnout every time. Never the same players though. Us Americans just can't stand watching it even though we love the sport. Its very popular. People who don't think it is are very ignorant about the change happening in America. The town I live in is only about 25,000 also. Not very big at all

There are 17 million REGISTERED players in the US This does not count those playing in unsanctioned leagues. More than half of those would qualify as girls and boys. Participation in soccer exceeds that of Little League Baseball. Soccer has reasonable attendance when you consider the lack of promotion and airtime it receives compared to hockey which has the closet total attendance.
Check out the following attendance figures
Last year's average attendance
NFL 67K
MLB 30K
NBA 17K
NHL 16K
MLS 15K
WNBA 8K
World Baseball Classic 19K
Women's World Cup 20K
So Major League Soccer attendance holds its own compared to the NHL and NBA who have a thousand times more pub. The World Baseball Classic couldn't outdraw the Women's World Cup!!! Soccer hater = Player hater
