Not really. But then, it depends on what your hymen is like (some are iron clad strong, others break early on when we're kids) and also on what other kind of activities you're doing. Tampons as well as sex sometimes can leave the hymen in tact. Remember that we already have a small opening for menstrual blood to come out. That's why we can get our periods when we're as young as nine. Look up "hymen" on Wikipedia for more info.

No, it is safe to use a tampon. It can be a bit tricky to learn how to put them in at first, though. Relaxing and practice helps.
