It seems there is a lot of conflicting info in these answers. Maybe there isn't a way to tell the difference?

Not really...that I know of,except to take an inventory of what you ate recently and if it was cooked thoroughly, if it was raw, or had been contaminated. Otherwise, there is no real way to tell, since they have such similar symptoms. It doesn't really matter if it's food poisoning or a virus..you still have to wait it out. A virus can't be cured with an antibiotic, only a bacterial infection can. So..hope ya feel better soon.

When you have severe diarrhea, and you suspect food poisoning and you arrive at the hospital all dehydrated and sick as a dog, we collect stool samples for Ova and Parasites, Clostridium Difficile (C DIF) and culture, We wait on the results to come back. If it is a bacteria such as shigella, salmonella or campylobacter, we isolate it in the stools and treat it accordingly. Sometimes C Dif is the culprit. If nothing shows up, we assume you have a viral gastrointeritis. Sometimes it goes on and on and then we start working you up for colitis by doing a colonoscopy.
You would not believe the number of people who have diarrhea.

Rule of thumb: even as uncertain, it is probably acceptable to ask a medical professional. that is my journey with foodstuff poisoning and abdomen viruses, as i have had both and also I surely have done somewhat analyze. foodstuff poisoning can variety from being both very severe (spewing your guts up for hours on end) or very gentle (diarrhea that clears up in an afternoon or 2). It truly relies upon on the micro organism in touch and/or how a lot you fed on. abdomen viruses, on the different hand, produce similar indications, is often observed by using a fever and is going away interior one to 2 days. It truly varies from man or woman to man or woman. you may be experiencing some thing else besides foodstuff poisoning or a plague. i do not recommend to alarm you, yet because you're already in touch about it, you may want to probably bypass ahead and make an appointment with the medical professional. she or he will have the capacity to have the capacity to furnish you extra proper peace of recommendations. i am hoping you experience extra proper quickly, although!

Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, it will stop food poisoning in a quick, for real. Ive had it real bad, several times, it felt like I was going to die, but the apple cider vinegar cures it every time. If it doesn't work it wasn't food poisoning. If it is a stomach virus eat Garlic cloves or capsules. Unless you want to take the unnecessary, painful, and expensive route (have your stomach pumped out).
I hope you feel better soon.

A good way to tell the difference is when the person begins to have fever, usually, stomach viruses do not present fever.
In both cases, usually people have diarrhea and vomit. You should go to a doctor, he would tell you exactly what to take.
