It is a state of mind for people that are mad at the world but they don't know why. They generally seem to wax philisophical about bull shi-t. They want to be different and can't do it in a positive way like volunteering, being active in a community, donating. Instead they walk around all gloomy, smoking cigarettes with a face that looks like a spike pit from Raiders of the Lost Ark. They should read a book and learn that the world doesn't have anything against them, the Matrix was just a movie, hanging from rings on their back is detrimental to their health, Vampires are fake, and metal things stabbed into their face is unsanitary and should be taken out when they are working in the food service industry for the rest of their lives, and that the color black is way too hot to wear in the summer because it absorbs all colors in the light spectrum and warms up fast. I have no idea how their dying culture was named after the magnificent historical art period of the 1200's and the roaming tribes of warriors in Roman times.

It is a lifestyle and method of expression. It is a turning towards the darker and moodier(or should that be suicidal?) side of society, one which is not normally found in 'normal' society. This involves usually the typical heavy metal Goth music, expressions about demons and spirits, and at the more extreme end Satanism. However I know several 'Goths' and none of them are Satanists. I have it on good word that only extreme Goths are true Satanists, and some more moderate ones hold Christian beliefs. In fact they see their Goth culture as a form of lifestyle in which they explore the furthest reaches of society, both physically and spiritually, in a way which harms no-one at all.
So to answer the question, it is probably a state of mind rather than just about the fashion- just wearing black doesn't make you a Goth.

Actually, Gothic is an architectural style. At least, before it was a fashion or a state of mind.

No, it's a social group.

i have heard that gothic people say they want to be different to everyone else but they are very simalar to each other!

I consider myself to be different from other people but in my own way and I don't go pushing my "differences" in other peoples faces like some people do just to prove they might be better or something.

All young people seem to kind of kilter towards one section of society or another according to what they feel most suits their needs or feelings etc at that time. I think you can actualy grow to like a kind of music/way of dressing/culture etc if that's where you gravitated towards in the first place.

Personally I don't think it's a state of mind; some people may like to dwell on the darker things in life and want this to reflect on the way they dress so they join the goth club. I have yet to meet a truly fulfilled gothic person.

It's a style of architecture. The UK Houses of Parliament were built in the Gothic style in the 1850s.

i believe itts the lifestyle your are talking about right?

think it started early 80's. bands such as sisters of mercy, the mission, and to a lesser degree the cult were leaders in the goth movement.
its artistic expressionism to a degree but its also an ideal ithink. (?)
the music often was centred around myth and legend and serpents etc, sounds a bit sissy (can i say that?) but albums such as the cults love album and missions carved in sand are well worth digging out if you are interested.
it kind of died a death (how appropriate) in the early 90s but a resurgence of moody black fingernailed bands started reappearing in the mainstream music mags and the movement was kind of reinvented/ re born.

its not all about dragons and lady of the lake so much now but,, whilst not being up to speed with the modern day equivalents iguess you could say him, cradle of filth(though very heavy for a goth sound) and a.f.i. are forerunners of the movement these days.

not that i know about modern music.

the general feel i get about the movement is its kind of an aukward upbringing kind of mis fit label. not in a bad way. its just maybe people who feel alienated by the mainstream.
most goths are articulate, sensitive people once you get to know them.

christ now im david atenbrough.

hope that helps

gothic is a way of expressing yourself in terms of art, design and appearance. so i suppose it encompasses both aspects, fashion and state of mind.
