I have a 1 month old, who about 2 weeks ago started spitting up .5 to 1oz of his formula, almost every time he eats. He is also constantly hungry, eats about 5oz every 2-3 hours, all day and night long. When he eats, he ravages at the bottle and has not been sleeping well at all, only a few hours in a 24 hours period, 45mins to an hour at a time. If he is down for 2 hours, we are lucky! He just spit up a clear bad smelling liquid, after not eating for about 2 hours when I picked him up from a short nap. I did an ultrasound him him last week, they came up negative, but im still very worried. Is there a tell-tale sign that I can tell if my boy is OK? He seems to be peeing and pooping normally.. but this is my first im not sure what "normal" is.

thanks!

for a diagnosis your baby would have to have a upper gi-which is a study where the tech puts barium in a bottle and feeds the baby under fluoroscopy (continous xrays) while the radiologist takes xrays of the baby drinking in different positions -or he might have acid reflux-gerd-which can help w/ a prescription of zantac for babies-and he'll sleep much better too-

Pyloric stenosis is a blockage. Pyloric Spasms are not a complete blockage but cause projectile vomiting also. My son had the latter. He'd nurse fine, but then, after about 10 minutes he'd vomit up a one foot stream of milk. I took him to a specialist who told me that as long as he was gaining weight, he'd be okay and that his pyloric valve would strengthen and all this would stop when he stood up. Sure enough, when he was 8 months old and started walking around holding onto tables, it all stopped!! But it is a mess dealing with it in the meantime. Also, you might try soy formula. That seemed to help, too. Good luck!

First born sons are more prone to this than daughters are, or so the nurses told me when my son was diagnosed. He had only gained 1 pound in his first 3 months of life and was projectile vomitting regularly...also very difficult to burp. He was first hospitalized at 6 wks and they found nothing. A day before he turned 3 mths old, they did an ultrasound and found it. He went for surgery and was fine. I had to feed him like he was newborn again because his system wasn't used to having milk digest properly but he quickly gained back his weight. I was told as well, that pyloric stenosis isn't usually caught until 3-6mths of age...i'm glad they caught my son's at 3mths. Hope this helps.

pyloric stenosis can be thought of as a GI obstruction. You can feel a lump in the upper abdomen of the baby. And the baby usually projectile vomits...ie the vomit will travel quite a distance, unlike spit up

If he's peeing and pooping, he should be ok. He might be sick and that's why he's throwing up. But to my knowledge, with Pyloric Stenosis, they don't poop well if at all, and everything should be coming back up not just a little bit.
