My poor pet rats are so hott right now. Its not only humid right now but just plain out HOTT. I have a fan going on in my room.. infront of the window to try to get as much cold air as I can in the room.. But I also have the lights off to reduce any extra heat as possible. I have taken a huge water bottle and filled it with water and froze it and put it in their cage.. For them to lean on.. And Im making sure that they have cold water and everything.. But I feel like its not enough. They squek whenever I try to pick them up. They wont eat much and theyre just like laying down whereever I put them. I feel so bad. I need some advise on what to do!!!

Basically, ice their cage.

- Small container of ice in the cage
- ice cubes in a water dish
- frozen treats, like fruits
- frozen wet washcloth (some like it wadded up, some use it as bedding, etc.) Avoid letting the rats get wet AND cold.
- (My fave!) Take a plastic tub or shoebox that will sit on top of the cage well and fill with heavily salted water. Freeze for at least 24 hours in the coldest freezer you can get. Set it on the cage to let cool air drift down from it. (Plain water freezes at 32, salted water will get a lot colder.)

You have the right idea with the frozen water. Try putting several in there. Ice cold water or frozen if you could wait that long. Get some sandwitch bags and fill them with ice lay them around the cage. It should cool it off enouph in there that they wont siffer as much. When you get the temp in the cage down you can remove some of the ice bags and only leave enouph to keep it cool. They may try chewing on the bags so you could also try bowls or cups of ice place aroung the edges on the inside They may like to even nibble on the ice.

My rats liked to swim. I used to fill up the bath tub just a little with cool water, and put them on something that floated so they could get in at their own pace. Do not spray them with cold water or put them directly into a pool of cold water, it could cause them to go into shock. If they aren't eating much, give them Gatorade or some other sport drink, this will help keep them hydrated but also keep them healthier than plain water because they need all the electrolytes they can get.

Hamsters, however, don't seem to do well with water. They aren't swimmers like rats. My hamster became smelly after he played in a little bowl of water, but he survived.

There's a way to make it fun for them to cool off. My rats don't like water and freak out if you put them in a bowl of water. So what I do, and was told by rat experts, is to get a bowl (I use a ceramic dog bowl so they can't tip it over) and put cool water in there with some frozen veggies.. normally peas. They will fish around the bowl to get the peas and it will help keep them cool.

I know what you meen, I have a rat too. Soak a small towel in cold water and put it in there cage. Hopefully they will catch on and lay on it to cool off.
Hope they get better!

if you have like a mini fan, maybe you can set it by them. or maybe set them close to the fan you already have. and if you want to get one of those jelly ice packs, and put a thin towel around it, put one of those in there. or maybe you could do it with a bag of ice. but DONT give them a bath. my sisters hamster died from that the next day. rodents arent meat for giving baths to. just a hint. ;]

rats are very resilient; been around for millions of years. they can handle some heat, but they don't like to be in direct sunlight - keep them in shade w/ lots of water (don't think it needs to be frozen, though).
