It's supposed that you sneeze out the Devil. God bless you thereafter restores your defences.

In ancient times some people believed that when you sneezed you would expell a demon and Bless You was said when you sneezed. Also some people believed that when you sneezed you let loose of your soul so Bless You was meant to save your soul.

when the black death was about in the 1700s it was before 1666 when it was the great fire of london one of the first sign of it was when someone sneezed people would say bless you and it just stuck like the song ring a ring of rose the line a tissue a tissue we all fall down was from that time as well

I have read somewhere that if one says God Bless you when you sneeze it will keep evil spirits away that are released into the air when you sneezed.

Well I was told by a Muslim friend once that its is because your heart stops when you sneeze and you say bless you to get Allah to start it again...not plausable I know but I thought it was a lovely story.

it stems back to the days of the plague, if you started sneezing it was believed to be the first sign of the plague and your home was painted with a cross to tell people someone in your house was dying from the plague,hence bless you.

I've heard that "priests", during the middle ages i think, believed that when you sneezed it was your soul trying to escape your body, and by saying bless you it kept your soul in your body.
