Because it is on the scale of things, relatively harmless--its not addictive, it does not cause one to be violent. So far there is no connection between smoking it and cancer. Although there is a connection with emphysema. Like alcohol it can have positive effects on the body.

People might view it more objectively and perhaps more neutrally if certain powerful interests didn't use it to further interests (read DEA) and if it hadn't been symbolic for the anti-viet nam war activists and college students of the 60s. In short, marijuana was politicisized by several groups and still suffers the effects.

From the way you have posed your question, you appear to be among the brain-washed who still think that "Reefer Madness" is an accurate depiction! I bet you've never even tried it and couldn't point to one negative effect you ever suffered from it if you did.

One need only look to Amsterdam to see that there is no connection between legal marijuana and crime or of it with violence and I don't see an epidemic of Dutchmen with lurid diseases as a result either (and the Dutch smoke it too, its not just for tourists).

Well, I certainly don't think it is harmless. However after all the 80's bull about "this is your brain on drugs" and then learning that the legal drug alcohol, is much more harmful and causes more deaths per year than weed, I am skeptical of any public service announcement. On another note, weed does contain more carcinogens then the same amount of tobacco in a cigarette.

Marijuana is still called Cannabis and its harmful to both the Alcohol and Tobacco Industries. It would be a wonderful taxable product, but those against it use the same kind of hyperbole used against Gay Marriage, its use would hurt their feelings and their stock gains.

Because the information on marihuana has been handled down as harmful by some powerful interests. Before it was known as cannabis. It was a raw material for such things as cloth, shoes, medicine, etc. But since it could harm some multimillionaire industries, it was banned. I advice you to search for some info in the net.

while it may not be totally harmless... other legal drugs that are considered "safe" like alcohol and tobacco are actually probably more dangerous than marijuana... medically speaking...

and you're in a more altered state with alcohol than you are with marijuana...

It's as "harmless" as Tobaco and alcohol if that's what you mean.

It's the hypocrisy and naked greed that are being ridiculed. No one is saying there are no risk associated with inhaling any kind of smoke directly into your lungs.

As a former avid dope smoker in high school I do not think that dope is as destructive as alcohol, you do not hear of teenagers getting high and driving and killing themselves and everyone else in the accident. They just do not publish those kinds of statistics, but alcohol has become more socially acceptable to adults and therefor has remained legal and in the public eye

It's how much you smoke that makes it harmless. Hell they issue it out for medical reasons, don't they?
