Anticipating the ground assault, Nasrallah sought to ensure his group's survival and safeguard its widening base of support in Lebanon and abroad by lowering the bar for what would constitute victory.

In a television interview broadcast Friday, he defined victory as a successful defense.

And he acknowledges the gravity of defeat.

I think that Americans and Europeans do not understand the Islamic mind. I do not think Hezbollah intends to win a war. This article seems to indicate that these Hezbollah wackos have no illusion. It seems that the whole intent is to do whatever damage they can, no matter how many innocent Islamic people are killed by the Jews. They will sacrifice thousands just to kill a few Israelis. As an American, I do not understand this unique brand of insanity. But it is insane; starting a fight that you know you cannot win. Admitting at the very start that you expect to take heavy losses, but that is alright as long as you make the Jews lose a lot of people too? This is sane? No wonder we do not understand them.

First, you need a clear definition of what it is to be a coward. Then you need a much clearer definition of war than you obviously have. Lastly, you have a remarkably nebulous definition of "victory".

Take a look at history. How did the American colonists manage to overcome the mightiest army in the known world despite being nothing more than a rabble - an ill-armed, untrained, undiscliplined rag-tag band of individuals who differed but little in their behavior from those resisting Israel today? Come on -how did that happen? Were these people supermen? No, they were not. Were they any better, physically, morally, legally, than the British army? Nope. So what did make the difference?

No, Hezbollah is not made up of cowards. To call them that is to fail to recognize how truly dangerous they are and to instill in oneself and one's allies a false sense of superiority. That false sense of superiority has happened again and again throughout history, from the most ancient of times to the present. It invariably leads to overconfidence and carelessness - and far more often than not, to disaster. Ancient Rome is only one of the more spectacular of disasters...conquered the known world and then after continually misjudging and underestimating it's foes, was itsself conquered - and not just once. Shouldn't have happened, logically. Rome was THE world military power - the world's only superpower - and it's foes were mere rabble, barely more advanced than cavemen. But collapse Rome indeed did.

So don't make the mistake of underestimating Hezbollah. They are brave - often stupidly so, but they are incredibly brave nonetheless. They are cunning. Okay, call it sneaky, call it devious, call it backhanded - but remember, so were the American colonists. Could Britain have overcome the American rebellion had they behaved differently? Probably. Can we overcome Hezbollah and their ilk if we behave differently? Probably so. But we will not do so by calling names and taking these enraged masses lightly. That's why they're so dangerous: they've studied history and they know what they're doing. And we cannot afford to keep on behaving towards them as we've been doing, because that is playing into their hands. Y'don't do that in Poker and y'don't do that in war. These fanatics can but sting while we can slam 'em but good! But eventually, they could sting us to death....

Yes they are. They are a terrorist group. Not only do they attack Israel unprovoked but they have taken away the sovereignty of Lebanon by performing an act of war without the permission of the Lebanese government or people.

i wouldn't call them cowards in the definition of the word. i sure as heck wouldn't stand there and take up a defense against a superiour force.

i think people like to call them cowards to give themselves a sense of being better, by down playing the enemies.

all in all, they are there to fight and to hold ground any way they can to acheive there victory.

do i agree? no. but it is reality and the way they fight and many other groups fight.

how else would you propose the hezzballoh fight against isreal?

altought i dont support hezbullha or al-queda or any of those terrorist groups i still beleive in giving credit were credit is due, you probally dont have the balls to do half of the things they do, like being outgunned and outnumbered and still fighting is cowardly, by your logic isreal is also hiding behind its advanced weponry and its airforce (seeing how neither lebanon nor hezbullha has any air defense system)and its 9,000,000,000 $ funding a year from the U.S.. people who call people cowards just cause they dont like them and then call people who they do like heroes even though essentioally they do the same thing as the people they dont like make me sick.

Anyone that uses children as human shields deserves to die. I hope the media takes this opportunity to show the world what cowards these people are.
