Oh, Gosh, do cats ever have feelings. I can tell when mine ours is happy. He not only purrs, but he kind of treads his paws on soft fabric and gets this far-away look in his eyes as if he's in a trance. He looks like the Dalai Lama then.

When he trusts us, he throws himself in front of us, rolls on his back, and exposes his belly, a very vulnerable spot for him. When we'd go away for a few days, his feelings seem hurt and sad, confused and angry, and he wouldn't look at us or make eye contact with us for days after we returned. The only way we got him past this was to be sure we all hugged him and made over him wildly (even though he pretended to protest), and then he realized we didn't "abandon" him. After that, he's reassured, back to himself right away.

He also gets jealous. He may be ignoring me completely, but he will flip out if someone gives me too much attention. In no time, he will come over and lay on my lap as a territorial gesture: "She belongs to ME." And NOT move. His emotions are so transparent that it really cracks me up, but I treasure that he's so attached to us and is so expressive. Nothing aloof about this guy. He's really just "the kid with fur," as far as our family goes since he communicates his feelings so clearly.

Hope I've given you some examples of the language cats use to express their wide range of feelings.

Maggie hit the nail right on the head. Cats have personalities, and most of the time they are transparent. Over what? Emotions are funny that way. They come and go just like anything else. If you live, you feel. I'm not sure any human and/or animal is immune to it.

well I know about angry- you play with their tail long enough, they get pissed off and swat you. And they don't care how much they hurt you! Happy would be signified with the purring. And I'm sure they feel sad, especially when they watch you pack a suitcase. When they jump in your bag, it's as if to say, "No Mommy don't go!!"

Cats definitely have feelings! They'll usually let you know about them if you pay attention. They have their own personalities and will show in their own ways what they like (usually by purring) and if something upsets them (hissing, ears going back, hair standing up, etc.) Mine show love too, running to me when I talk to them, touching their nose to mine and licking me, snuggling up with me. They seem sensitive to human feelings too, in that they'll come to comfort me when I'm upset or sick. I'm sure that they don't think about things in quite the same way that humans do, of course, but they do have emotions like we do.
