There are two stage gas furnaces on the market. First stage uses approx. half the gas for the first stage heating with a slower fan speed. The second stage is like any single stage gas furnace, using 3.5 in. wc. for natural gas and 11 in. wc. for propane, with a higher fan speed for heating the home. This type of system is the ultimate for comfort, as there are not big temperature swings with this type of system if installed properly.

If it is a heat pump, first stage heating is using the compressor to provide heating. If it is too cold for the unit to keep up, the second stage heating will turn on which will mostly likely be heat strips or on duel fuel units it will turn on gas heat.
I don't know of any residential units that use electric or gas only that have 2 stage heat but it is possible.
