I would suggest exercising more. I find I "stress eat" less when I work out. Working out is a good stress reliever.

I have the same problem and posted a question last night titled "I'm a confessed emotional overeater." And honestly, none of the answers helped me. I have learned through experience that the best thing is to just keep busy. And I know that when you're out with people it is so hard to overeat as well. But really, just keep busy and surround yourself with people you like. Take up a hobby. Do you have a YMCA around? Join a kickboxing class or something (I know you're a college student so money is probably like nonexistent). Do you like to jog? Jogging is always so refreshing for me, I love it. But I am a big couch/lazy eater and pretty much the best advice is to not let yourself be idle when there is food around. Any time you feel the urge to make a trip to the kitchen do something else. Brush your teeth (no one likes to eat after they just brushed their teeth anyways), chug a glass of water and then drink slowly a glass of water, walk around the block, dance to your favorite song, take a hot bubbly bath. Anything to prevent your idol, emotional eating. Good luck :)

Do you have a dog? If yes it wants you to take it for a walk, a long walk, every time you get stressed. No dog? Get a push mower and keep the grass short, sweep the driveway, even if it is dirt. None of the above possible, walk the neighbour's pet. Live in an apartment, the elevator is broken, take the stairs. All the above will help with the stress and when you do eat, you'll need it to replace the calories you burned off.

No, dont eat less but eat more meals a day.. 4-6 a day. Drink a lot of water. As for the stress, unfortunatlly most of us eat when we are stressed... take a walk and a bunch of water.. or maybe next time grab the water and drink several bottles before you eat.

Good Luck

Make yourself wait a few minutes before going to grab the ice cream or chips. Sometimes this stalling tactic works. Other times, just take whatever it is you're eating and throw it out if you know it's going to continue to be a temptation! I have to do that with ice cream sometimes. If I'm stressed and unhappy, I can demolish a container of ice cream. Stalling does help me sometimes, though. I make myself do something else.

I think and I am not a qualified expert, by anyone's standard, but it could be subconcious. Your bored or your stressed and food will fill your time or destress you. I know I do that.

What you might consider doing is before you open the closet or refrigerator, think about why your doing it. Are you truly physically hungry or are you eating for anothe reason?

Or you could take a walk. I know excersize will often fill up my time and destress me.

Good luck.

You've got to retrain yourself not to head for the kitchen when you are stressed out. Try going for a quick walk around the block instead. If you're still hungry when you come back, do your best to choose something healthy.

There is no alternative to snuggling under the duvet with a piece of cake and a cup of tea!
