absolutely, he is close to 6ft5in tall and listed as 235lbs. that is not heavy, also you don't win 343 games being out of shape. pitching takes a lot of energy, stand out there for 9 innings in 103 degree heat and throw 100-200 pitches that is why they rotate them every 3 to 4 days.

I think this is a very good question. What defines an athlete, and more importantly what defines a sport? Is Golf a sport, nascar, chess, video games, tennis, etc.? If someone participates in a sport does it make them an athlete? I think a sport should require physicality, strategy, and skill, that all push a persons limits. I think clemens should be considered an athlete because pitching is incredibly straining on the body, takes a lot of skill and strategy. It is not straining to the whole body, but a lot in the legs and the shoulder.

I would say, WITHOUT A DOUBT, he is an athlete.

Definition: "An athlete is a person who has above average physical skills (strength, agility, and endurance) and is thus suitable for physical activities, in particular, contests. An ancient Greek word for "contest" was athlos, and those competing in the games were called athletes.

In more specific settings, an athlete is one who participates in competitive events such as professional sports. "

Clearly, he would qualify as one who participates in competitive events (professional sports).

To pitch as long as he has, as successfully as he has, is a testament to his conditioning. Although he may appear out of shape because he he has a little more body fat than, say, a Lance Armstrong, his workout is notoriously grueling (see second source below for an example.)

It is true that you don't have to be the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest to play baseball, even in the Majors. Babe Ruth certainly wasn't the classic image of a world class athlete. He didn't do any weight training (it was frowned upon in that day and age in baseball), and his appetite for food and alcohol was legendary. Even he, however, fit the above definition, as a competitor.

Clemens is not Babe Ruth. He is clearly one of the all-time greats in baseball, and in sports in general, like Ruth. However, Clemens knows that to stay at that top level, you must condition yourself.

Besides the other qualifiers for being an athlete, this illustrates above all the most important quality: the desire to be the best.

To be at that age and still have that dominance requires a lot of skill and training. Everyone who knows baseball knows that Roger Clemens has a rigorous training routine that is well known throughout baseball. He is an athlete and to be able to have such command and still have that kind of power means that he still is athletic. Pitching is very tiring, I have done it for a couple of years, and if he's still in the league pitching with dominance w/o showing much fatigue then he still has to be a bit athletic to me.

Dude dont let Roger's body frame deceit you. He has one toughest workout regimes of any player in da league. One of my cousins worked at Yankee Stadium and he told me Paul Oneil and Clemens were the one who worked out the most. You think he out of shape but whens the last time he had a injury? How many times have you seen him go +100 pitches in a game? Thats not skill its just plain athleticism

Yeah, over the course of his career he would have to be considered an athlete. However it's funny to me how none of these cry baby pricks who belly ache about Barry Bonds, don't look at the guys pitching in baseball. Especially the guys over 40 who are still going strong. Any HGH usage or steroids with these guys you think ?

I think anybody that pitches like he does for as long as he has is not only an athlete, but one of the best ever. All you have to do is look at his wins , strikeouts and Cy young awards to know he belongs right beside the greatest athletes ever.

Well Roger is aging but he is very well an athlete. You can't throw those type of pitches without having lots of athletic ability.

Athlete? Sure, why not. I think he's kind of been playing us as fans for a few years now with his 'I have to spend time with my all-important family, woops, that's one heck of a contract' crap. Also I thought he showed really bad sportsmanship when he nailed piazza in the head in the all-star game and then threw a bat at him in the world series, back in...01?
