The first time I fell in love I was in college; I wrote my parents a three-page letter telling them how wonderful she was, and how happy she made me feel. She took me home to meet her parents; I got a haircut and bought a new shirt, I was so anxious to make a good impression. We both told our parents.
If your friend is sneaking around having sex, and the boy says he loves her but he doesn't want anyone to know, I would suspect he is lying about the love to get the sex.
Sooner or later your friend is going to meet the man of her dreams and he will ask her to marry him. With luck he and her father will go fishing together and help each other when it comes time to mend fences, roof the garage, make a cradle for the first grand-child, carve the turkey at Thanksgiving. My son-in-law is a great guy; I like him a lot.
Does her boyfriend look like he is headed in that direction, or is he the kind who will vanish like a puff of smoke if she tells him she thinks she is pregnant?
A good rule of thumb about love is that it makes you happy and proud. You want to shout your beloved's name from a hill top. If she is ashamed or afraid to tell her parents, I'd say that was a warning sign that something is not right.
