I would be very careful about letting the seedlings grow We used to have one and ended up with trees growing right across the lawn.
When you pull them you will find there will be little roots on them.
Just put them into compost in plant pots and water well, and make sure where ever you put them they can't invade any thing else.
You will find if you prune it in January it will grow a lot bushier

I agree with Castell; we had one and it was a flipping nuisance, there were shoots coming up everywhere. In the end we dug it up and got rid of it. They aren't actually seedlings though; they are offshoots from the roots of the main tree. If the tree isn't too big you could try digging it up and replanting it in the garden in a large container with no holes in the bottom so that the roots are contained, but this isn't really suitable for trees that are quite large in the first place, or that are going to get quite large because the tree won't be able to get sufficient water and nutrients.

I'd wait until fall to transplanted your sumac seedlings. just ensure the seedling has plently of roots and use a sharp spade to seperate it from the parent tree
