There are many breeds that can barrel race, but Quarter Horse would be best at the sport.

Quarter Horses have low-set body and have extremely strong body built for tight turns. Since they were bred for cattle work, which requires tight turns, quick start and obedience, their body is perfect for barrel racing.

For a horse to excel at Barrel Racing, it must have extremely quick start and make super sharp turn with great speed.
It is true that any horse can barrel race, as long as it can handle the pressure it gives on the hooves and is trained, but no other horse would be as good as QH. All the international competiters of barrel racing use QHs.

If you are planning to just compete for fun and have a friend, get any breed you wish to have. If you are planning to do other riding career as well as barrel racing, depending on wich riding careers you would want to do, get a horse that can do all of your careers. If you would like to do western pleasure, english pleasure, jumping and just do as many different riding types as you can, I would suggest a Thoroughbred. There are so many reasons why TB is my favorite breed. They can do any types of riding career, and they are especially good at jumping, dressage, and 3-day event.

If you are planning to be competitive and you have a big goal, I would definately recommand a QH because they are the breed that excel at this sport the most.

Though other breeds will be able to barrel race, they won't have quicker and sharper turns thatn Quarter Horses.

I hope this will help.

Any breed can barrel race but Quarter horses are built for it.
They are fast at short distances and they are built to trun tight and fast.
Their legs will hold up to the stress of barrels better than say a thoroughbred. The TB would be faster but not a tight to turn and would do much better at longer distances.

Mostly stock horse breeds like Quarter Horses, Paints, or maybe even Appaloosas. My sister trains and works with horses, she barrel races also, and those breeds are the more succesful ones.

It depends what level you want to run at. Several breeds have done it...many have done it well. Quarter horses, Paints, Appaloosas dominate but Morgans, Arabians, Walkers, Saddlebreds and others have been used. I've seen a Clydesdale do it also...people laughed but she had the 3rd fastest time...covered lots of ground! The individual makes a difference as well as what level you want to run at.

any breed of horse can. some are better at it than others, but they can all do it. I raced my Arabian and in my area Arabs are reallly popular for barrel racing. So are quarter horses.
