There was a book written about the events following the movie but I do not think a movie sequel was ever seriously considered.

The book was called E.T.: The Book of the Green Planet and it was written by William Kotzwinkle.

A description of the book taken from Amazon.com:

"Now, at last, we see where E.T. comes from -- who he really is and what his own distant world is like. Return with him to the Green Planet, whose inhabitants are the supreme masters of all growing things in the galaxy. Wander through their immense enchanted gardens, to which E.T. has returned, with Gertie's geranium, a fondness for junk food, and an all-consuming love for the earthling Elliott and his family.

But things on Earth have changed since E.T. left. Elliott has begun to notice the opposite sex, and his cherished memories of E.T. are losing ground to thoughts of a girl in his class who wears a rhinestone ponytail clip. More important, he seems to have forgotten E.T.'s teachings of gentleness and peace. "He is about to become the most terrible thing of all," observes E.T. from three million light years away. "He is about to become -- Man."

Here is the truth Steven Spielberg has actually said on record (he said on the special edition dvd of E.T.) that he has been asked many times about a sequel and he said that he would never do it ever becvause the story is so close to his heart.
In his eyes the story of E.T. is about a little boy (Elliot) looking for a substitute father because his parents are going through a divorce and it just happens to be this little alien.
Steven went through the exact same thing as a child and so did i and i can see where he is coming from by saying he will never do a sequel and in the same interview he said that too many films get spoiled by sequels and that E.T.should just be left alone and quite right he is too,i mean who are we to argue?

See the web site below....
Barrymore, who was just six years old when she became famous for her part in the 1982 ET directed by Steven Spielberg. Now, Drew is in sequel talks with Spielberg.

According to an inside Hollywood source, "Drew has spoken to Steven about it.
Although he thought she was joking at first, he's actually giving it serious thought”.

Apparently, the "Fever Pitch" producer, now in her 30s, thinks the world needs another feelgood movie like ET right and she's prepared to work with Steven to make it happen”, the source added. (contactmusic.com)

I remember ET being one of my family visits to the cinema and a host telling us that there was going to be an ET2 but then I heard that the person who played ET died????? lol
Hence there was never an ET2, lol would really love to hear of anyone who heard of the same thing.

I think that would flop at the box office or go straight to DVD. I don't think they can make a decent sequel to ET.

yeah, I heard rumours of Drew Barrymore trying to bludgeon people into a second film but I though was like 1 or 2 years ago.

I don't think anything has come of it and they should just leave it alone.

too many films are ruined by a follow up.

Drew Barrymore once said on Johnny Carson that they were making one, but not to tell anyone. That was about 18 years ago.

i bet no one ever thought of it. I'm sure you are the first. I think you should produce and direct it - maybe even have the lead role.......
