The History of The Twinkie

1933 - Twinkies were introduced by The Continental Baking Company in Indianapolis, which also made "Wonder Bread" and had a snack line your probably familiar with called Hostess. One of their bakers named James A. Dewar got the idea for the "Twinkie" while he delivered one of their products, a cream filled strawberry shortcake. The machines to make these sat idle when the strawberry season was over so he came up with an idea to use them to make a snack cake filled with a banana filling, and only charge a nickel for a package of 2. It was good idea as money was tight for people during the great depression

Hostess Twinkies were invented in 1931 by James Dewar, manager of Continental Bakeries' Chicago factory. He envisioned the product as a way of using the company's thousands of shortcake pans which were otherwise employed only during the strawberry season. Originally called Little Shortcake Fingers, they were renamed Twinkie Fingers, and finally "Twinkies."

In fact, Twinkies were never even supposed to be vanilla flavored. In 1930, Twinkie inventor James Alexander Dewar was trying to figure out what to do with his bakery's strawberry shortcake molds when berries weren't in season.

IN 1933 my grandma - the GREATEST HOSTESS IN THE WORLD made up some filled cookies for a birthday party.

Some guy who owns a bakery tasted one and pinched her recipe.
She innocently gave it to him, not knowing who she was talking to.

Mister TWINKY never did pay her any money or even own up to where he got (purloined) the recipe!

(My next story will be about a tooth faerie!)
