I answered a similar question several weeks ago. 9= best answer).Search "How do I get rid of ants that have come into my home." I cannot seem to cut and paste, on Yahoo, or I would have done so and saved you the trouble of looking it up..
Regards, Dan.
P.S. you can add the insecticide chlordane to my comments if you can find an old can. (they do not sell it anymore). The answer had several environment friendly suggestions too.

You already shot down the answer I was going to give you. I don't know if you can or not put them in cabinets. I do know from experience that traps work. You may not need to put them in cabinets. If there is a trail of them across a counter and leading to a cab, put the traps along the counter trail. The bait in the trap smells and tastes GREAT to them (kind of like a Mickey D Shamrock Shake), so they bring as much of it as they can back to the nest. There, the other ants eat the bait and the whole nest dies. If this isn't the case, call an exterminator. They are experts on what poisons do not harm food, etc. They really aren't that expensive. If you have an ant problem now, think of how bad it's going to be when dropping temps drive ants indoors out of the cold.

I have had great luck with chalk. I put a thin continuous line of powdered chalk around my house. Ants will not cross it. Prevent them from getting into your house in the first place....Also a ring of chalk around an ant hill close to your home will force the ants to abandon that particular hill. I use contractors chalk line chalk. Can find it in the hand tools section of any hardware store. It is usually colored.

Ants will not cross baby powder. I would advise using a non poisonous alternative.
