I do have a lan connection near my box, so maybe I can receive initial setup downloads through the internet?...

You have to have a phone line to set up your TiVO but you don't have to leave it in. Without a phone line you need to use a wireless TiVO router sending a signal to your wireless internet.

Yes. You have to pay-per-view over the phone or online, but otherwise it works fine. We've had it off the phone line for over a year now, no problems. The only thing, every time you access the TiVo menu, you get a message, "It has now been 423 days since you called in...".

I haven't had my TiVo hooked up to a phone for almost 2 years. You get messages asking you to hook it up, but ingore them.

yea you can use ..we only have cell phones in my house ..no lan line ..and we have dvr and it works
