well here's the deal. I am a mega drama/music fan, freak (whatever u want to call it) and i have total respect for sports ppl. I just have no interest in sports. In my home town sports take precedence over just about everything and the arts are pushed to the very back of every sport's fan's mind. we get no respect!!!! but hay, I'm just speaking from my own experience. If u want respect you need to give it!!
God Bless!!!

Yeah, like somebody said, I think you're generalizing both ways--you're assuming that all arts people don't respect sports (not true), and you're also assuming that all sports people respect arts (also not true). Personally, as somebody in the arts, I'm a sports fan too--baseball, anyway--and a well-pitched game or a beautifully turned double-play or a brilliant piece of hitting is practically an art in itself. But you also have to admit that if you went to most schools and said,"Hey, how about cutting money from football and basketball so that music can have new instruments, drama can have better costumes, and the painting and drawing class can have better materials", they'd laugh you out of the room...Respect is as respect does...

I believe that you have made a mass generalization.

If you look at the history of the arts, all mediums of art are a reflection of the human condition. Many artists pay tribute to the human form via a representation of the most "beautiful" forms. In the minds of the Greeks, athletes personified human beauty.

It is our (an artist's) respect of athletics that makes us better artists. What you are confused by is that sports fans (American mostly) love the thrill and pump of football and baseball so much that they make fun of those who do not participate in the same way.

However, if you go to England, you will find many many many people who love theatre, but would kick out your teeth if you spoke ill of their favorite football club.

In the end, is it about respect? Or just interest?

Well...for me, I love both equally. I used to be a theatre major...I adore opera and broadway. At the same time Im a huge RedSox/Patriots fan. I think generalizing is dangerous...but I also understand that most arts people are not into the sports thing. I guess you should take comfort that there are a few of us out there that appreciate both with equal passion. Hope that helps! :)

Because we don't have wide world of opera and 10 ballet programs on every weekend, or great jazz hi-lites at the end of the nightly news etc. Oh, and when I play the piano I can't spit and scratch my balls while the camera take a tight close up.

I am bothered by the fact that a city is willing to tax its citizens to build a new stadium for hundreds of millions of dollars, but barely contribute to the renovation of its opera house.
