It really kinda depends on the person. A week before you get them you have to get spacers between a couple of your back teeth where they are going to put the anchor dealio, and if your teeth are pretty close together then spacing them out might hurt. The braces themselves will only hurt for a few days after they first get put on and then when you get them tightened. Some people also have to wear rubber bands for part of the time they have braces to fix the position of their jaw and stuff like that. Those hurt the worst for me personally, because they make your whole jaw hurt and not just your teeth. The only other thing is that the metal rubbing on your mouth may give you canker sores, but your orthodontist should give you some kind of wax or something to put on the parts that are rubbing. Hope I didn't scare you too much, good luck!!! Oh, and if your teeth do hurt just remember that its a good way to get milkshakes and stuff from your parents since they won't hurt your teeth ;).

I just got my braces in June and they hurt for just a second. The hardest part is if you get spacers. The spacers hurt. I was surprised at how fast I got use to the braces. In a week I couldn't believe I had braces. But the teeth will hurt after each adjustment. And they may start hurt suddenly, but will stop in about two days. The teeth will be sensitive. I guess they're moving.
Have fun with your braces and soon you'll have a wonderful smile. I can't wait to get mines off.

They can cause pain and irritation. I meen, its not the end of the world, just uncomfortable. I had braces for four years. It hurt a little every time they were tightened because the teeth would be moving. Tylenol of ibuprofen helps. Also the metal would rub against the inside of my lips. That is probably the biggest annoyance. It causes blisters and cuts. But your dentist can give you wax that you can pull off and put on the brackets so they don't rub. And if you ever get hit in the mouth, that really sux. But its not constant pain, it will be okay.

i had braces for a couple of years. braces don't hurt when they are put on. it can be a little uncomfortable because the dentist will have to stretch your mouth a little to put the braces on, but it isn't painful. After the braces go on your mouth will ache. so again it is not painful so to speak. it is just a sore feeling and you won't feel like eating for the first day. its not as bad as you think it is...so stop worrying! your teeth will look so nice and straight when the braces go off!!

Absolutely they hurt each and every time they are adjusted. I spent much of junior highschool drinking a liquid diet on the days following these adjustments cause it hurts too much to want to chew. Braces are basicaly pushing your teeth around in your mouth so of course this is going to hurt. Personally I continually wondered about my orthodontist and other orthodontists if they didnt go into the proffession because they enjoyed inflicting pain. The mere thought of it all makes me cringe remembering the dull ache post braces adjustment and brings back memories of the movie "marathon man" with dustin hoffman.

Yes they do hurt. I used to have them in high school. The only reason they hurt is because your teeth are moving into the proper places to get them straight. Take some asprin to help ease the pain. Ask your othordontist if maybe he can prescribe some other form of medication that can work without getting you drowsy. Good luck buddy!

it depends on how big the wire is. My dentists start off with the smallest wire in the falthead valley so it did not hurt that much. It only hurt when i pushed on them. as the wire gets bigger the more they straiten your teeth. If you take tylonal or ibprofent every 6 hours or what ever the bottle says for atleast 2 days it should not hurt. Thats what the dentist told me.

A Little bit when you first get them on.You can get something at the drug store to put on your gums where they hurt that will take the pain away. You can also(If it's OK with your parents) take a regular Tylenol, let it melt in a few drops of water and rub it on with a Q-tip.It will take the pain right away.Good Luck!

well i havent gotten braces but my friends that do have them said that it hurts when they talk, sometimes their skin gets stuck to the braces. They also can't eat chocolate or chew gum. You should get Invisalign their like clear braces that you can't see and you can take them of whenever you want.
