What I was really looking for was the fact that he assumed the presidency without ever having been elected to either the presidency or the vice-presidency. He was appointed Vice President when Spiro Agnew resigned, and assumed the Presidency with Nixon's resignation. He proved that the Constitution's means of succession was workable and the Union survived the term of an unelected President proving that the People ultimately are subject to the law, therefore proving that we are a Republic.

We were literally at the crossroads. Down one path lay the opportunity to expose the corrupt, rotten system for what it was, and to change it for the better. The other path was the quick and easy solution. Condemn the perpetrators, expose the obvious crimes, but leave the system as intact, including keeping most of the Nixon administration around.

Ford chose the quick and easy path to continue corporate dominated government. His choice (and congress's) are directly responsible for the disgrace we are faced with today.
